What can you do with that part of your yard where "the sun never shines"?
My client had that very problem to resolve when she had us completely rebuild and replant her backyard in Kirkland WA. This portion amounted to about 1/4 of all the work we did there, but I've always admired the way this turned out.
So not all plants need direct sunlight, it turns out, and here we chose varieties that could handle the shade. Since the space is so narrow and comes to a dead end, rather than just fill it up with plants that no once would ever see (there are no windows along this side of the house) they chose to put a meandering pathway and a tiny patio in. That way people can sit back there and enjoy the coolness during the heat of summer.
